Photoshop tutorial on making Placeholder

Create a picture placeholder in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

Some of our previous students asked about creating a photo placeholder in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Since I was asked several times, I decided to write this article. So here we go:

Suppose you want to create an album and want to use the same template on all the pages. This tutorial is about making a placeholder for your photos and text.

-Create a new canvas in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and use the dimensions for your page.

  1. In this example I selected two different shapes.
  2. Repeat steps 3 and four for the second selection

Two shapes

  1. “Deselect” the selection (Command+D in Mac or Control+D in Windows)
  2. To use the template, just drag your photos onto the canvas. Position each photo in a layer above a photo placeholder layer and then “CLIP” the photos on, by pressing Command+G in Mac or Ctrl+G in Windows for Photoshop Elements or Alt+Command+G in Mac and Alt+Ctrl+G in windows for PhotoshopCS/CC. Make sure you are on the photo layers when you clip. You will probably need to resize your photos using the Transform command (Command+T/ctrl+T).

Now you can add the text and SAVE AS jpeg. The job is done!-

Save the template for future use.
