Does a Specific Camera Make Better Pictures?

Great Camera Debate Part 5

Previously we looked at the different categories of digital cameras, such as Point and Shoot, Entry level, Prosumer and Pro cameras and I discussed the reasons you may prefer one over the other. As a matter of fact you may even need more than one kind of camera! For example I have a Pro DSLR and a small point and shoot camera. In this article we are going to look at the images from cameras in all the different categories to find out if the camera really makes good pictures or if there are other important elements to making good pictures besides camera type.

Does a Specific Camera Make Better Pictures?

The answer is NO! You can buy the most expensive violin in the world and give it to me to play a song for you. Will I play a good tune? Definitely not! And for the simple reason that I don’t know how to play a violin. Similar examples are all around us. Photography is an art and, like many artists, we use tools to express our feelings and talents. In THIS ARTICLE you can find more information about the art of photography.

Now back to our topic: all cameras are just tools. Some tools are more advanced and some are basic. The outcome depends on your skills and talents. Learning the techniques and thoroughly understanding your camera will enable you to create good pictures all the time. Look at this sample image:

What camera was used to capture this photo? Was it a point and shoot camera? An entry level camera? Or a pro camera? It’s hard to say, isn’t it? Because the photo is correctly exposed and has good composition, it is next to impossible to say what type of camera was used.

Here is another example. Can you tell what type of camera made this picture?
