Education leads to Success

Insights from one of our students

We’ve all heard the saying: Practice makes perfect. It says that it takes 10,0000 hours to master a skill. Wow! If we wanted to fast track this process (and it is a process!), what would be the best way to do it?

In this short article, I look at the importance of the role of education and how it leads to Success.

Maria Killam is a renowned interior designer who leads many successful workshops in Canada and the USA for interior design. She is also one of the most talented artists I have ever met.

Here is her testimony after taking one of my photography classes:[/vc_column_text][vc_hoverbox image=”12625″ primary_title=”” hover_title=”Maria Killam” el_width=”80″ reverse=”true”]I have had my DSLR Camera for over 2 years and had no idea how to use it. As a colour expert, decorator and design blogger, it’s so important for me to have pretty images on my blog. I had tried many times to take photos that included a window but my automatic functions (auto settings in camera) would not allow it. That one day when I learned how to turn an image from dark and bleak to a light filled space was worth the entire price of the course. Your patience and sense of humour with a bunch of novices in the class was great! Thanks again for a great boot camp! I look forward to learning more from you! Thank you so much!

Recently she wrote a blog post and mentioned the importance of education for success. In the part of her article she wrote:[/vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_style=”outline” icon_type=”pixelicons” icon_pixelicons=”vc_pixel_icon vc_pixel_icon-camera”]“I would like to thank Ted Karlsalr my photography instructor (pictured below). I hired him to give me some extra photography tips while I was shooting my home; I wanted to make sure I was using all the right settings. Ted introduced me to the world of Lightroom. I didn’t know that it comes with Photoshop when you buy the monthly plan from Adobe. Lightroom manages all your photos, automatically saves all your changes, and is much faster for editing. You only need to move them into Photoshop if you need to do things like take out wires, etc. And you can download them right into Lightroom when you are shooting so you can easily see what has to be moved in order to get the photo absolutely perfect. Ted regularly holds classes on photography, Photoshop and Lightroom; it was only when I started taking his classes 3 years ago that my photos on this blog started to improve dramatically. After I took his Photoshop class, every couple weeks I would go to his office for an hour or two of private lessons so I could learn exactly what I needed to know to edit my design photos and these lessons were hugely valuable. I want to thank Maria for her kind words and continued support. Education is the key to success, especially when it comes to technical skills.  Great pictures are the result of good composition and correct exposure, regardless of what equipment you use. Our photography workshops are focused on teaching you important skills for getting good exposures and composition. No matter what kind of camera you use, you can make wonderful photos when you learn the fundamentals of photography. Our Digital Camera Bootcamp is an 8 week program which covers all the major topics and equips you with the skills to confidently capture amazing photos. It includes two field trips (one daytime and one night time photography) where you put all the lessons to good use out in the “real world” with a variety of settings and conditions.

We encourage you to make a commitment to educating yourself to success by registering for one or two workshops in 2017. Together let’s make the New Year a time when you see real advancement in the quality of your photographs.
