Thursday Portrait Photography Tips: FOCUS ON EYES

Focus on Eyes is the Key

There are many rules in Portrait photography, and I try to explain a few of them in my posts. Follow us for more tips!

The eyes are the windows to the soul and the most crucial element among all portrait photography tips. Unless your subject’s eyes are hidden from the camera, they must be razor-sharp. Otherwise, the image will suffer – no matter how on-point its lighting and composition are.

How to Focus on Eyes?

There are two methods to lock the focus on the model’s eyes:

1- Move the focusing point and set it over the eye.

2- If you don’t want to move the focusing point in single focus mode, focus in the eye, hold the focus button and recompose the frame.

Rules for Successful Portrait Photography

We offer many tips in our Portrait Photography Courses that take your photography to the next level.

Our next portrait and model photography workshop starts on September 15, 2022. It is a three-part class and all hands-on skills.

Thursday Portrait Photography Tips: BREAKING FACE LINE

A Portrait Photography Tip: Do Not Break the Face Line

There are many fine lines for successful portraitures: how to position the body, arms and legs, eyes, mouth, etc. One of them is about the nose and the face line.

Don’t Let the Nose Breaks the Face Line!

It is one of the most advanced tips for creating fine art portraits.

While taking portraits, pay attention to the model’s nose, especially when taking profile images.

If the nose breaks the face line, it looks longer! And no one likes a long nose!
However, keeping the nose line within the face and cheek border makes it looks smaller and more pleasing.

In these sample photos, you notice that a little shift of the model’s head dramatically affects the look of her nose.

Wednesday Photography Tips: PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS; Posing the Head

KEEPING THE HEAD STRAIGHT OR TILTED?

Portrait photography is all about body language. So, to have successful portraiture, a photographer should think about the message behind the photo.

Here are a few tips for posing models to convey the right message.

STRAIGHT HEAD POSING

The straight-head posing usually shows the determination of the model. It is a powerful pose for business headshots if you want to send the message of a strong personality.

TILTING HEAD POSING

Tilting head is the most famous portrait pose among many companies to show their clients that they are open, friendly, approachable, and a good listeners.
However, make sure that you are not over-do it. Just tile the head slightly. Too much tilt can cause unwanted wrinkles!

Wednesday Photography Tips: PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

TIPS FOR AWESOME PORTRAITS

Portrait photography is the most popular genre. Here are a few tips that improve your photos.

1- Bounce the shoulders, i.e. one shoulder higher than the other. This pose creates a friendly composition.

Portrait Photography Tip

Portrait Photography by Shandi Adam

2- Broad shoulders are not too pleasing. A 2/3 turn on shoulders makes the model slimmer. Leave some room around the model.

3- Don’t turn the shoulders a lot; it creates neck getting stretched—just a small amount of turn.

Portrait Photography Tip

4- Being in front of the camera makes people uneasy Ask models to drop their shoulders, creating a more relaxing image.

Wednesday Photography Tips: LENS FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY TIP

What is the best lens for Portrait Photography?

It is a general question among portrait photographers. Although there is no simple answer, I explain a few tips for selecting a perfect lens.

Suitable Lenses for Portrait Photography

A standard lens or a short telephoto is the best choice for the focal length. So, any focal length greater than 50mm will do the job. My favourite focal length for portraiture is 85mm to 135mm (in Full-frame cameras).

Aperture

On the other note, a lens with a larger aperture (f1.8 to f2.8) is the optimum lens. It provides greater control over the Depth of Fields to create a soft and creamy background.

Perfect Lenses for Portrait Photography

A larger Aperture allows you to control the depth of fields

Lastly, I try to avoid wide-angle lenses for portraits unless I create unique images, like the picture below.
