TIPS FOR AWESOME PORTRAITS

Portrait photography is the most popular genre. Here are a few tips that improve your photos.

1- Bounce the shoulders, i.e. one shoulder higher than the other. This pose creates a friendly composition.

2- Broad shoulders are not too pleasing. A 2/3 turn on shoulders makes the model slimmer. Leave some room around the model.

3- Don’t turn the shoulders a lot; it creates neck getting stretched—just a small amount of turn.

4- Being in front of the camera makes people uneasy Ask models to drop their shoulders, creating a more relaxing image.

Should the Mouth be Opened or Closed?

Whether we smile with our mouths open or closed is something we don’t often stop thinking about. But the mouth has a significant impact (like the eyes) in portrait poses, in part because viewers will observe a lot about the portrait from body language cues. And that body language includes the position of the mouth, like smiling.

In recent years it has become a trend to emphasize a strong jawline in photographs. Jawlines make a face appear slimmer and add a nice contrast to it.
Try this little trick for yourself:
Stand in front of a mirror and look at your jawline while your mouth is closed. Then open your mouth slightly and look at the jawline again. Can you see the difference? This is what I am talking about!

What is the best lens for Portrait Photography?

It is a general question among portrait photographers. Although there is no simple answer, I explain a few tips for selecting a perfect lens.

Suitable Lenses for Portrait Photography

A standard lens or a short telephoto is the best choice for the focal length. So, any focal length greater than 50mm will do the job. My favourite focal length for portraiture is 85mm to 135mm (in Full-frame cameras).

Aperture

On the other note, a lens with a larger aperture (f1.8 to f2.8) is the optimum lens. It provides greater control over the Depth of Fields to create a soft and creamy background.

A standard or short telephoto lens is suitable for portrait photography.

A larger Aperture allows you to control the depth of fields

Lastly, I try to avoid wide-angle lenses for portraits unless I create unique images, like the picture below.

Part one: Natural Light Portrait Classroom session

Wednesday, September 29, 2021, 6:00-8:00 pm

The classroom session covers camera settings, exposure modes, metering modes, ISO, White Balance. I also discuss elements that you need to consider for choosing an outdoor spot, modifying light using reflectors or other modifiers. You learn female and male posing skills, and how to create natural-looking poses, and more.

Course suitable for:

This intensive and fun portrait Workshop has been designed for those wanting professional yet straightforward portrait photography and posing workflow to capture outstanding portraits and headshots.

Workshop Outcomes

  • Understanding camera settings
  • Learning Posing for Female and male models
  • Icebreaking skills
  • and much more!

What to Bring

Participants should bring a camera with manual control (Such as DSLR or Mirrorless camera), a lens with a minimum 50mm focal length (don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions regarding your camera and lenses), fully charged batteries, memory cards, and many questions. 

Prerequisites: 

Basic photography knowledge in Exposure.

Part two: Outdoor Field Photography session

Saturday, October 9, 2021,10:00, am to 1:00 pm

This part is all in the field. Your instructor checks camera settings and provides suggestions for participants. All students gather into smaller groups composed of three photographers, and each group has a model to work with. Your instructor is there to answer your questions. This three-hour session gives you plenty of time to shoot perfect portraits and learn Ted’s list of Do’s and Don’ts.

We all have remarkable artistic views, especially when it comes to shooting portraits. Portrait Photography Class is a specialized program that focuses on Portraiture skills.

It is a three-part workshop and covers Natural Light Portraiture, Fill-Flash Portrait, and a field trip.

In part one of this workshop, you learn how to set the camera, use the existing light and pose models according to light.

Part two covers the uses of a flash as a fill-light to take your shooting skills to the next level.

Finally, part three is a field trip. There will be professional models in this session. You practice the portraiture techniques, and your instructor guides you throughout the course.
