Wednesday Photography Tips: LIGHTPAINTING TECHNIQUES

Lightpainting Techniques Tip:

Sunsets are beautiful! But photographs of sunsets can be, well, a little boring on their own.

Today, Brett Michaud shared his Lightpainting Techniques Tip.

Brett’s Lightpainting Photography Tip

By placing an interesting subject in the foreground, you can add some interest to your image and make your sunset photo really stand out.

But be warned! Achieving the correct exposure can be extremely challenging, not to mention frustrating.

Expose for the subject, and the sunset is blown out. Expose for the sunset and the subject is nothing more than a black silhouette.

Fortunately, overcoming this obstacle is easy with a small light source. Even the light on your cell phone will do the trick.

This image, taken on my recent trip to Hawaii, was created by lighting the totems with a small light source placed on each side of the totems. It effectively overcomes the backlighting issues and makes for a more exciting image. And while the sunset itself was beautiful, I think you’d agree the totems really add some character to the overall picture.

Quick Camera Tip: SETTING FOR SEASCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

A Quick Tip On Camera Setting For Seascape Photos

I decided to share a Camera Setting tip every Monday.

This tip is about Seascape photography by @BrettMichaud, our new instructor.

Seascape Photography Tip

Vancouver Island Photo Tour
Vancouver Island has a unique landscape. Discover the beauty of West Coast.

Seascape Photography Tip by Brett Michaud

On this rather dark, overcast day, I wanted to capture the stormy feel of the ocean by freezing the motion in the water and showing the size of the sea. It required a fast shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second. The use of f/11 provided an adequate depth of field.
The low ambient light levels coupled with the mid-range aperture setting and fast shutter speed meant I needed to use ISO 320 to achieve a good exposure.

It’s important to remember that when photographing ocean waves, it is always wise to underexpose your image by a ½ to 1 full stop, so the crests of the waves are not blown out.

Do you want to learn more?

If improving your seascape photography is something you’d like to do, we invite you to join us at our workshop on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

Wednesday Photography Tips: SELF-TIMER

Using Self-Timer to its Potentials

Do you use your camera’s self-timer? It is not just for taking pictures of yourself; it has more uses. Here are a few tips on using the camera’s self-timer more creatively.

Most digital cameras offer at least two different self-timer, a 10-second and a 2-second timer.

The 10-second timer provides a longer time, so you can jump in front of the camera and join the gang to capture a group shot or a self-portrait.

Self Portrait

Merry Christmas

If you shoot long exposure on a tripod and don’t want to create any camera shake while triggering the shutter, use the 2-second timer to stabilize the camera even more. That is the function I use pretty often.

2-second Self-Timer

Use the 2-second Self-Timer to stabilize your camera on a tripod when shooting long exposure.

Slow shutter speed makes the moving elements blurry and creates amazing effect.
