Canon EOS 5D MK III Field Test Using Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS Lens
I took the Canon 5D MK III and the EF 24-105 for a test drive last week. I tested the camera in different light conditions with different settings. Overall I am very pleased with Canon EOS 5D MK III field test results.
The Canon 5D MK III performed very well in variety of hard conditions, as I was trying to push it to its limits! There are four different categories that I performed the test, Indoor, Outdoor, Metering Modes, Focusing system, and Auto White Balance. Here we are the first Canon EOS 5D MK III field test result.
Disclaimer:
All the pictures are taken Handheld, in Raw format to test the Dynamic Range, Auto White Balance, and Manual Exposure using Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS. I have used High ISO in indoor photos and ISO 400 for Outdoor pictures. The Image Stabilizer was activated in all photos. All images are converted to JPG in Adobe Lightroom with no colour correction.

Indoor Photography
In indoor photography Canon 5D preforms unbelievably well. The focusing is fast and Accurate, even in very low light situations. I shot this photo at ISO 6400 and the noise level is minimum.
Although the light was very dim (that I had to use ISO 2000 in this photo), the camera precisely focused very fast on the focusing point.
The test result shows that the Canon 5D MK III is a perfect camera for indoor photography (such as Sports, Wedding, or Event Photography).

Metering Modes:
a-Evaluative Metering
I am not a big fun of multi-segmented metering (in Canon terms “Evaluative”) as it always clipped the highlights, but Canon’s new algorithm of evaluative metering is very impressing. It does maintain the highlight as much as possible. Here is the photo in evaluative mode.
I also used evaluative metering for this picture and just opened up the Shadows in Lightroom.

b-Spot Metering
Spot Metering works as it is supposed to work. I didn’t have any issues of over or under exposure using spot metering.

Focusing System:
Canon EOS 5D MK III has a very sophisticated focusing system. I really appreciate the dedicated Focusing Menu and Function Keys. Changing the focusing points is now very intuitive and easy. I shot these photos using Single Shot Mode
When it comes to moving subjects, it is always a good idea to use AI or AI Servo. I really enjoyed the speed and accuracy of Canon AI Servo focusing mode. It tracks the subject and maintains the focusing.
Auto White Balance
New Canon Auto White Balance is incredibly pleasant. I did not adjust the White Balance in these photos. I shot these photos in shade. Usually cameras produce a very cold colour cast in this situation but Canon did a good job. The colours are very warm and pleasing.
