It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed”.

There are many challenges for us as photographer to capture the fun and feelings of Halloween traditions. One of these challenges is how to tell the story of the Halloween in photos and maintain the memories for years to come.

Taking Halloween pictures needs a change to your everyday photography rituals. The biggest change is Lighting. Using the dim and colourful light is part of the Halloween fun. Here are the tricks for you:
Start early and capture some of the preparation activities
Don’t wait for the nightfall. Start taking pictures as soon as the preparation starts. These pictures are the best asset for telling the story, as an album, or slideshow.

Using Twilight
For best photos, try to use the twilight. All pro photographers agree that rich blue colour of sky makes a very impressive contrast with colourful costumes and Halloween decoration. Plan your day to use this amazing light effect.

Avoid using the camera popup Flash
Using the camera’s pop up flash can really ruin your photos. It is a very small, yet intense light source that brightens the scene unnaturally and creates harsh shadows. The brightness of the flash will override the ambient light and will remove the feel of Halloween fun.
Use Auto ISO
Instead of using flash, activate the Auto ISO in your camera. By activating the Auto ISO, the camera tries to use the minimum possible ISO to capture the photo. After all, a little grain in Halloween photo can be interesting.
Using Higher ISO and Noise
White Balance Setting
Auto White Balance works, but I suggest you use the Daylight (Direct Sun) White Balance preset to enhance the blue colour of night sky and it also shifts the other colours accordingly. I also suggest to use other White Balance presets, as they change the colours of the image, to explore new possibilities.
