Creating landing spot in pictures, a simple yet effective rule in landscape photography
Each genre in photography has their own composition rules, including Landscape Photography. Some of these composition rules are specific to its genre, whereas others can be universal, which means you can use them for all different types of photography. Landing Spot is one of those rules that applies to Landscape Photography more than other genres. In this article I am going to discuss this simple yet effective composition rule in landscape photography.
What is Landing Spot in Landscape photography?
In landscape photography it is important to add a spot to the pictures that the viewer would feel like they are standing there and look at the scene. Here is an example for you:

In the left photo I added a piece of the land to the picture and use it as a framing for the whole scene and a landing spot for my viewers. 90% of audiences prefer the left image over the right one! Why is that?
Show a starting point
It is more natural to our brain to understand the depth of the scene, and also find a place as a starting point. By adding the landing spot to a landscape photo, you simply provide these elements to your viewers.
Let’s have a closer look
I took both pictures on a tripod. Same exposure setting, but the feel of these two photos are totally different.
No Framing or Landing Spot
In first photo the camera was set at my eye level. The picture is very nice, but it lacks something, it needs an improvement.
Landing spot added
I just lowered the height of the tripod and added a piece of foreground land to the image. You notice that this little height adjustment made an effective enhancement to the picture.

There many more composition rules for different photography genres. In this short article I discussed one of them. Composition Rules are the flexible rules in photography that you can apply or break! It is fun to learn the rules and then break them!
