BRIGHTER CHRISTMAS PHOTOS

How to Make Brighter Christmas Photos

Last week, I discussed why not using a pop-up flash for Christmas Photography. However, the main concern is the pictures may turn dark. In this Wednesday Photography tip, I show you how to make brighter Christmas Photos.

Brighter Christmas Photos Tip

Exposure makes the brightness of an image. Therefore, Shutter speed, ISO, and Aperture control the brightness.

When the ambient light is dim and not bright enough, we need to compensate for the exposure by slowing down the shutter speed, increasing the ISO, or opening up the Aperture.

Let me explain each one in a little more in detail. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20219″ img_size=”600×800″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Brighter Christmas Photos”][vc_column_text]

Slowing Down Shutter Speed

For sure, you can slow down the shutter speed as much as you want. However, if the camera shakes or the subject moves, you get a blurry picture.

So, you need to keep the shutter speed at a minimum of 1/60 seconds or faster for Christmas party pictures.

Increasing the ISO

In most modern digital cameras, you can increase the ISO to about ISO 12800, which is too much, mainly if you use an entry-level digital camera.

The suggested ISO range is ISO 100 to 6400. In this range, you get less Noise ( Grain), and the images are sharper.

I recommend the ISO 800 to 1200 for the best result for indoor Christmas photography.

Using Aperture to Make Brighter Christmas Photos

So, our last resource for making brighter Christmas photos is the Aperture. Most of the kit lenses or entry-level lenses have the maximum wide open Aperture at f3.5 to f5.6, which is not sufficient for dim light photography. A lens with a maximum f-number at a range of f1.4 to f2.8 is ideal for taking brighter pictures in dim indoor light. Therefore, using a pro lens can maintain the shutter speed and the ISO in the above safe mentioned range.
