A Simple Christmas Photography Tip | Shutter Speed and ISO

Our next Christmas Photography Tip in Exposure is about Shutter Speed. Finding the sweet spot in Shutter Speed for Christmas Photography is very important. You don’t want to shoot with a very slow shutter speed to avoid camera shake or subject movement which result blurry photos.

Here are tips for Shutter Speed and ISO;[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Do not use the pop-up flash!” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:35|text_align:left|color:%23aa3300|line_height:1″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]You have spent hours to decorate your Christmas tree and surrounding area. All of sudden if you use the flash, you won’t see any of those decorative lights in photos! So the first important tip is : “Stop Using Built in Flash”!

But my photos are either too dark or blurry!

So this leads us to our new Christmas photography tip. The photo is too dark because the exposure was not correct. And the blurry photo tells us that your shutter speed was too slow.

Let’s fix these issues![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20223″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Incorrect exposure”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Use Auto ISO
” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:35|text_align:left|color:%23aa3300|line_height:1″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]In almost all newer digital cameras, there is an “Auto ISO” option. By activating the Auto ISO, your camera increases the ISO to balance the exposure. In many digital cameras you can set the minimum shutter speed, to activate the ISO increase. By default the minimum shutter speed is set to 1/30s, which you may want to increase it to 1/60s, especially when taking photos of kids! They move all the time!

How Auto ISO works

When you set the Auto ISO and set the minimum shutter speed to 1/60s, as soon as the light gets dimmer and 1/60s can not make the correct exposure, your camera increases the ISO to compensate for the light. I cover the uses of Auto ISO in Photography classes in details, but for now just trust your camera Auto ISO and take fantastic pictures using this Christmas Photography tip.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20222″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Correct exposure”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn”]

Conclusion

For better result in Christmas Photography, don’t use the camera built-in flash. Activate the Auto ISO and set the minimum shutter speed to at least 1/60s. Have fun with your Christmas Photography!
