How education can help you take good photographs

What is a good picture?

This is a very good question. Generally speaking a good photo means correct exposure and perfect composition. The composition is the artistic part of photography and, like other sorts of visual arts, it is subjective to the artist and their audiences.

Exposure, on the other hand, is a set of rules that one must follow to achieve the right brightness and contrast. In pursuit of good (even great) photos, all photographers work from the same set of exposure rules and guidelines to successfully capture their photos.

When shooting in Manual Exposure you can set the exposure and take photos till the light changes.

What are the rules for exposure?

Exposure is set by using ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture. Exposure can be adjusted by changing one, two, or all three of these parameters.

How difficult is it to learn about correct exposure?

Although it may seem complicated, I always use this analogy in my workshops:

“Just remember the very first driving lesson – it was way more complicated than what it is now. But with practice, driving a car became second nature and you are able to drive a car with ease and most of the time can enjoy the scenery, focusing on your environment rather than thinking of the process of driving.”

The same is true for photography. In your first steps in the world of capturing perfect shots there are many technical terms and settings you need to learn. At Omnilargess we design our  photography classes to help you navigate the world of photography with confidence.

Here is a testimonial from Stephanie, a student who took the time to write this kind email to me:

“By the end of the Beginner’s Digital Photography I had a solid understanding of the basic functions of my SLR camera.  It was great to have a live instructor who was able to show me the distinct features of my specific camera and help me troubleshoot when things weren’t quite right.  Ted’s explanations were clear, and the overall experience was a lot of fun!”

Our Digital Photography classes for beginners are in two parts: the first part is in the classroom where you learn theory and specific settings for your camera and the second part we head outdoors to take photos, putting what you’ve learned into practice. This two part workshop is about theory and application of theory; many of our workshops are designed around this proven way to learn new skills.

We love getting participant feedback because it assures us this method of teaching and learning works well for all beginning photographers. Raman signed up for our Digital Camera Workshop for Beginners and here’s what she wrote about the experience:

“As a beginner in photography, I was very pleased with how much information I learned within two days and it was very convenient when the classes were being taught. I was very happy with the instructor explaining a concept and then showing it individually on our cameras. He took time and helped us troubleshoot. And I enjoyed going out and actually taking photos.”

Check our Testimonial page for more testimonies about our workshops.

Our next beginners digital photography class is called Understanding Exposure in digital Camerasand is scheduled for  May 22 and 23. It is a two part workshop with lots of hands on practice time. Class size is limited to 9 persons.

I look forward to seeing you there.
