Formatting a Memory Card, Prolongs its Life
We all have heard the horror story that a memory card gets corrupted right in the middle of a trip or a wedding party. Indeed it is horrifying, but is there a way to prevent it? The answer is: Yes! By formatting the memory card, you can prolong its longevity. In this article, I am going to discuss why formatting a memory card and how to do it safely.
What is Memory card Formatting?
Before answering this question, I need to explain how a digital camera works, and then talking about Formatting a Memory Card.
In the traditional form of photography, i.e. film photography, the camera captures the shape and even colour of a subject. This a sample of how film cameras record the image:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22719″ img_size=”600×200″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Negative Film”][vc_column_text]On the other hand, in digital photography cameras do not record the shapes; instead, they convert the shapes and colours to 0s and 1s (a Binary code). Therefore, a digital picture is a bunch of 0s and 1s bound together with a specific binary code. When you want to view the digital photos, your camera finds and converts the binary codes back to light. This is a straightforward explanation of what is going on behind the scene in digital photography.
What is Deleting Photos?
When you Delete a photo, you do not erase it; you break the binary code. Ergo, the binary arrangement stays intact! Piling up of these arrangements can cause memory card corruption.
Formatting Memory Card Vs Deleting Photos
Generally speaking, Formatting memory cards not only breaks camera generated codes, but it also set the 0s and 1s to the manufacturer’s default arrangement. By Formatting a memory card, you increase the speed and reliability of the memory card.
How to Format a card
Usually, the Format option resides inside the Setup Menu. Locate the Format option, then proceed for formatting. The camera gives you a warning that Formatting will erase all data.
