Different reasons for rating photos in Lightroom
One of the most cogent reasons to use Lightroom is the ability to organizing your pictures library. Among all various tools, rating photos in Lightroom probably is the most popular one. In this article, I will discuss a few principles on rating images.
Organize Your Picture Library by Rating Photos in Lightroom
I don’t know of any photographer who can claim that all of his/her images are perfect. We all have some photographs that we are proud of them, some that we want to delete them instantly, and many more in between. Generally speaking, the “in-between” photographs are usually the most populated area in the picture library.
Therefore, let’s find out how to organize these images.
Why Rating Photos in Lightroom?
Lightroom has a variety of organizing tools. Rating photos is one of my favourite ones. There are several workflows for using the rating system, and there is no right or wrong about them. However, I adopted a workflow that works best for me.
You can adopt or modify this workflow to match your photography needs.
My Rating Rules in Lightroom
I always add Keywords while importing the photos to Lightroom. Therefore, my pictures have some sort of general Keywords (step one in organizing photographs.) While looking at the images, I start to rate them accordingly. For instance, if the picture is entirely perfect, it gets the five-star rating. However, it needs a few tweaking, such as cropping, straightening, etc., then it is a four-star photo. If the photograph needs more editing, such as Cloning or Recomposing, then it would be a three-star image. Therefore, I can delete the rest of the photos, as they are not worth to keep.
When I am searching for a particular photo, I can simply filter my search by using the Keywords and the rating. For example, I can search for Fall Colour (as a Keyword) and Five-star. Therefore, Lightroom will show me just the photographs that have “Fall Colours” as the keyword and rated five-star. If I cannot find the image that I like to use, I can expand my search to Four-star images, so on and so forth.
