Guidelines for Shooting Manual from an Expert 

Pro photographers prefer shooting manual, as they always get consistent results. Here are a few guidelines for shooting manual successfully.

Practice and Patience: 

– To start shooting manual, do not rush the steps. Take your time and go through each of the following steps precisely.

– At first, everything feels very slow. Keep practicing, and you will notice that after just a couple of weeks, you get faster. 

– Practice setting the exposure by looking through the viewfinder. Moving Subject’s Shooting Manual

When taking pictures of a moving subject, decide whether you want to freeze the action or make it blurry. Then set the shutter speed accordingly. Your next step is to set the aperture correctly. If needed, change the ISO to set the light meter to zero (centre).  

For instance, when taking photos of a flying bird, if you want to freeze the motion and capture a bird’s sharp image, use a fast shutter speed.

Using the Depth of Field in Manual Shooting

To use the benefits of Depth of Fields:

1. Set the aperture to your desired f-stop.
2. Change the shutter speed to adjust the exposure to zero (Centre).
3. Double-check the shutter speed. If it is too slow for hand-held shooting, use a tripod or increase the ISO. Increasing the ISO allows you to use a faster shutter speed. 

For instance, you want to take a landscape photo. Therefore, you need to expand the focusing range by using a higher f-stop. Set the aperture to f-16, adjust the shutter speed, and if the shutter speed is slower than 1/30sec, use a tripod.
