Decoding the Viewfinder Information
As discussed previously, the viewfinder information covers a lot of data. However, it needs to be decoded! The information inside the viewfinder varies from different manufacturers and even models. For instance, an entry-level camera provides less viewfinder information than a pro camera. That being said, there are many common data among all the makes and models. In this article, we are going to look into this popular information.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22459″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Popular Information inside a camera’s viewfinder”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Decoding the Viewfinder Information” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:35|text_align:left|color:%23aa3300|line_height:1″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]Just like many other technologies, there are many icons and abbreviations in photography as well. Although most of these icons and abbreviations are standard, there are some oddballs here and there too. Please check your camera’s instruction manual for more information.
Let’s start with the Focusing Point[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22462″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Focusing Point”][vc_column_text]The Autofocus indicator point shows where the camera is going to focus on. Cameras may have as little as nine focusing points or as many as 71 points! By default, the focusing point is in the centre (see the above photo). However, in almost all digital cameras, Photographers can move the focusing point off centre. See the picture below:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22463″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Off Centre Focusing Point”][vc_column_text]
Spot Metering Mode Area
The icon for the Spot Metering area may vary in different cameras. It might be a Small Circle or a pair of small Brackets. This icon represents the area that the camera uses to measure the light. By default, this area locates in the centre of the viewfinder. However, in some advanced cameras, it is attached to the focusing point. Therefore, when photographers move the focusing point, the spot metering area moves as well.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22465″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Spot Metering Area Indicator”][vc_column_text]
Centre-Weighted Area Indicator
The larger brackets or circle in the centre of the viewfinder shows the Centre Weighted area of the camera’s metering system. This area is always in the centre, and you cannot move it around like the Spot Metering area. However, in some cameras, photographers can change the size of this area.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22467″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeInRightBig” title=”Centre Weighted Metering Area Indicator”][vc_column_text]
