Review on FlashRight

New Flash Diffuser

A few years ago I wrote an article about flash diffusers and I reviewed Gary Fung’s Lightsphere. I wrote that it was the best light modifier for flash photography and complained about the bulkiness and size of it.

Later on Gary Fung came out with the collapsable version of the Lightsphere. I found another problem with this version! It does not fit easily in big flashes such as Nikon SB900! You have to modify it to use it on big flashes.

A few months ago Bas Stevens, a friend of mine and a photographer talked to me about a new diffuser “FlashRight” and asked me if I could review it. He gave me his sample and I tested it. Here is the result of my test drive.

At first glimpse it is smaller than the Lightsphere. It fits all different flashes, small or big. Good construction and materials. Very easy to install and use. You don’t need to glue anything to your flash unit and can easily adjust the light direction.

It comes with different color correction filters to balance the flash light with ambient light for better result. Here are some of the images that I took using FlashRight.

This is a direct flash with no diffuser:

And this one with FlashRight Bounced to the ceiling :

In this image I bounced the flash to the right hand side wall. Notice the nice and soft shadow:

That is a perfect light and color balance for this photo.

Now I wanted to test the color correction filter. I took this photo under fluorescent light. I preset the white balance to Fluorescent and added the provided fluorescent filter to FlashRight.

I am not happy with the result and you can see why! Then I switched to Auto white balance and here is the result:

Avery well balanced color!

FlashRight has lots of selling tutorials videos on their website and they are not really tutorials. They are basically  selling videos, but they can give you an idea of how it works. Their price point is still a little too high for what it is and what it does. I wish they drop the price to a more reasonable price.

I will do more test on diffusers in near future, so stay tune for more information.
