Lightroom Collections Part 3

Lightroom Collections as an Assistant, Part 3

What are Lightroom Collections?

In previous articles I explained how to create a folder or subfolder in Lightroom with a descriptive name and MOVE specific photos to this new location. I also covered Quick Collections and how using this handy feature can save you lots of time. Now it is time to learn about Lightroom Collections.

But what if you don’t want to relocate the photos to a new location? Adobe has a solution for that with the power of Lightroom Collections! Generally speaking Lightroom Collections work as albums or projects. Now that you know about the functions of Quick Collection, it is the time to take a look at Lightroom Collections.

What are Lightroom Collections and how are they different from Folders?

You create a folder in Lightroom to MOVE the pictures to a new location. In Collections Lightroom does not move photos to new location but marks them in the catalog to assist you to find them faster and be more organized.

What are the benefits of Lightroom Collections?

When you organize the photos in Lightroom Collections, you do not duplicate the images. It means you can have photos in several different Collections without having multiple copies of the same image. That is the most powerful feature of Lightroom Collections.

Can you give us an example of how you would use this feature?

Absolutely! When I was planning my new office location, I took photos of different stages of renovation. I wanted to share some of the photos with my interior designer (Maria Kilam) and use other photos in blog posts. Some of the photos were the same but some were different. I created a collection and called it “Maria” to add photos that I wanted to share with her and created another collection and called it “Office Reno” to add selected photos there.  As you can see in these screenshots, I have some photos in both folders. Lightroom Collections did not duplicate the photos, which means they do not take up any extra space on my storage device (i.e. Hard drive or cloud drive). I can also delete a photo from one or both collections without deleting the original photo.

I added some photos to this Lightroom Collection (Maria) and wanted to share them with Maria.

I also added some of the photos to this new collection and wanted to use them in blog posts.

This option is very useful when you want to create several different delivery methods for your client. For example, after a wedding you want to give your client some photos for social media, some for prints, and some for the in-laws. Create different collections and finish each collection with your personal touch, without being worry that the changes may affect the other collection.

Stay tuned for another amazing feature of Lightroom Collections called Smart Collections. Meanwhile let us know if there are any topics you want us to cover, and please check our UPCOMING CLASSES for more fun photography workshops.
