EXIF Data in Photo Editing

Using EXIF Data in Photo Editing.

In the previous article, I explained the EXIF Data in cameras and how this information can help photographers, especially new photographers, to learn and correct cameras settings. Now let’s discuss using EXIF Data in Photo editing.

In photo editing, just like photography, EXIF Data captures and represents complete information about the picture. Therefore, while editing photos, photographers can make better decisions on how to approach the post-processing.

Faster Photo Editing using EXIF Files

For instance, while editing the image, a photographer can check if the flash fired and if the White Balance matched the light source.

In the photo below, I noticed a considerable colour cast and knew that the White Balance was off. Also, I remembered that I used an off-camera flash when I took this photo.

Camera didn't register the Off-Camera flash as a light source, result a heavy colour cast

When I checked the EXIF Data, I found out that the camera didn’t register the off-camera flash as a light source. Therefore, it used the ambient light source, Fluorescent, for White Balance.

My camera did not recognize the Off-camera flashes.

Therefore, all I did in post-processing, was changing the White Balance to “Flash” to fix this issue.

It says that “Information is power.” Therefore, EXIF Data gives you the power in photo editing, as it provides a complete set of information that you can use this data for faster and more accurate photo editing.
