Technical Aspects in Portrait Photography Tips
In previous article I divided Portrait Photography Tips into two categories, Technical Aspect and Artistic Approach. In this article I am going to focus on Technical Aspects of Portrait Photography. We can divide the technical aspects into three parts, Camera Settings, Lens Selection, and Light. Let’s get started with the Camera Settings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Camera Settings for Portrait Photography
” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:35|text_align:left|color:%23aa3300|line_height:1″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]Portrait Photography mainly focuses on subject’s face and body to show specific characteristics of the subject. Therefore the camera should be set to certain settings to be able to capture the important features that describe the subject the best. To match the camera settings and the subject’s personality, you need to answer some questions first:
Questions which help making camera settings
-Is it a moving subject? Is the moving the main part of the subject’s personality? (Such as a Hockey player while playing)
-Do you want to add moving blurred to show the movement, or freezing the action? (Such as a basketball player while spinning the ball)
-Does the background help to showcase the personality of the subject? (Such as a farmer standing by the farm machinery)
-Does the background create distraction?
These are just few examples and there are many more that I will teach them in Portrait Photography Workshop. Answering these questions, helps you setting your camera’s shutter speed, and aperture, to enhance the subject’s personality in the portrait.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20361″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Use Camera settings to enhance the image”][vc_column_text]
Some real life examples:
By answering the above questions, photographer can make the decision for camera settings.
In this photo the photographer decided to use a faster shutter speed to freeze the ball and subjects action:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20443″ img_size=”400×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Fast Shutter Speed”][vc_column_text]To make the background as part of the image to showcase the subject’s personality, photographer used a wider Depth of Field:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20444″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Add story to your photos”][vc_column_text]A soft background puts our subject inside the story, and the subject gets all the attention:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”18987″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Make your subject stands out”][vc_column_text]Plain background is perfect for headshot:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20445″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”slideInRight” title=”Plain Backdrop “][vc_column_text]That is all for now. Stay tuned for my next article about Lens Selection for portraits as I will discuss what lenses work better for portraitures.
