How Spot Metering Mode Improves Photos

Recently, I posted a photo that I took using Spot Metering Mode. The image attracted much attention from Facebook and Instagram. Many asked questions about how and when to use this metering mode. So, I decided to write a short post to explain some of the basics.

Here is the photo that I posted:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23149″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Spot Metering Mode”][vc_column_text]Generally speaking, in a contrasty light situation, you can improve the image quality by just using Spot metering to capture the details on a particular part of the scene. For instance, if you take photos of a subject under intense light (such as the sun) and the background is in shadow and dark, you need to use Spot Metering.

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6080″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”High Contrast Light”][vc_column_text]On the other hand, if the subject is darker than the background, you should use Spot Metering again. Here is an example:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”14737″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Back Light Subject”][vc_column_text]Lastly, for taking pictures of the sky, sunrise or sunset, Spot Metering maintains the exposure for the sky. Therefore, you capture the rich and saturated colours of the sky. Here is a sample:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23118″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]
