Tips on Sunset Photography Techniques

Sunset and Sunrise scenes are very mesmerizing; Mother Nature creates an impressive colourful work of art in the sky during these times of the day. However, you may not be successful when you try to capture the view. These tips are about Sunset Photography Techniques.

Firstly, you need to use the lowest possible ISO for Sunset photography to maintain quality and sharpness. Therefore, using a tripod is highly suggested to avoid the camera shake.

Secondly, you need to know your camera and its limitations. Check with your camera’s Instruction Manual to learn more about the hidden features on your camera. In this article, I will discuss one of these hidden features; The Metering Modes.

Average Metering Mode

By default, most digital cameras use the Average Metering Mode. Manufacturers use different names for this Average Metering Mode; Canon calls it “EVALUATIVE,” Nikon calls it “MATRIX,” Sony names it “MULTI,” etc.

Generally speaking, in the Average Metering mode, the camera light meter measures the light from several parts of the scene and makes an average exposure. In the picture below, I used the Average metering mode. The camera tried to make an overall exposure. Therefore, it sacrificed the colourful sunset sky over the darkness of the foreground. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23117″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Sunset Photography using Average metering”][vc_column_text]As I mentioned above, the camera was on a tripod, so, just by changing the metering mode to Spot Metering, I captured this photo:[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23118″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Sunset Photography using Spot metering”][vc_column_text]Just by switching to Spot metering mode, I forced the camera to expose the sky and ignore the foreground.
