Do You Need a Light Meter to Set the Exposure Correctly?
The short answer is yes! However, you don’t need to use an external light meter, as your digital camera has a perfect built-in light meter.

How to Use Camera’s Built-in Light Meter
Most modern digital cameras have precise light meters. Thanks to AI, they can read and measure the exposure accurately. All you need to know is how to use different metering modes to achieve the proper exposure.
Generally speaking, there are three major metering modes: AVERAGE, CENTRE WEIGHTED, and SPOT.
- Use average metering if everything in the frame is equally important for your photo.
- When the subject is in the centre of the frame and is large enough to cover it, the centre weight metering performs very well.
- For small subjects or very contrasty scenes, I suggest spot metering.
