Quick Camera Tweaks for Expanding The Dynamic Range

Generally speaking, digital cameras are helpless to protect highlights. There are techniques for expanding the dynamic range to cover highlights. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Chasing Shadows Workshop is about exposure and editing photos to create dynamic range close to human eye

Tips for Expanding the Dynamic Range

1- Using Camera’s Software to Expand the Highlights is an easy option if you shoot in JPG. Camera manufacturers use different terms for this feature. For instance, Nikon calls it “D-LIGHTING,” Canon uses the “HIGHLIGHT PROTECTION” term, etc.

Check your camera instruction to find this feature for your camera.

2- Using Post-Processing: You can use post-processing software such as Lightroom or Photoshop to expand the dynamic range of images. You need to set the exposure for the highlights and brighten shadows in the post for the best result. This option works best if you shoot Raw.

3- An advanced exposure technique is an ultimate solution. To use this skill, you need to learn the Zone System and apply it wisely while taking photos. This method is the safest and best way to expand the dynamic range of digital photography.
