Shooting in Raw

Shooting in Raw Photos, Better Image Quality?

Previously, I explained why shooting in Raw provides more details in photos. However, a Raw file is not ready to be used. Therefore, photographers need to post-processing (aka Editing) the pictures and make them possible to display.

In this article, I want to discuss the importance of learning post-processing correctly.

Shooting in Raw provides more data for Editing.

As a matter of fact, shooting in Raw format does provide more details. Having said that, you should know how to extract the right amount of data from each photo correctly.

For instance, below photo is shot in Raw and converted to Jpg with no post-processing:

Original Raw Photo

On purposely, I edited the photo to it’s extreme. See the result:

Extreme Editing

A sample of heavy-handed editing.

On the other hand, I post-processed the same picture very light-handed and didn’t extract enough details.

Not Enough Editing

A lightly edited raw format does not justify the beauty of the photo

Finally, here is the correct post-processing for this image:

Correct Editing

Clearly, there are wide ranges of details available in Raw format. Thus, how much retouching is enough?

Shooting in Raw format is the first step to get into professional photography. However, learning how to approach the Editing part is even more crucial.

Lightroom Training Program

Hands down, Lightroom is the best photo management and Raw editing program in the market so far. To my experience, there is no other program as powerful as Lightroom. However, you need to learn Lightroom to be able to use its power.

Omnilargess Lightroom Training Program is a three-part workshop for beginners. It covers almost all the bases of learning Lightroom settings, from start to finish.

Our next Lightroom Training Program starts on November 4th, 2020. The class size is small to provide more interaction and time for Q&A during each session.
