Ted’s Photo Tips: Smartphone Photography Guides to Improve Pictures

In this day and age, Smartphones are an essential part of our daily life. No wonder that Smartphone Photography plays a significant role in our everyday photography life. In this article, I discuss a few Smartphone Photography Guides that improve your pictures.

When you look at a photo, what makes you pause and look closer?

For sure, it is not the camera’s make and model. It is the composition of the picture. So, let’s look into some helpful composition rules.

Essential Smartphone Photography Guides in Composition:

There are many composition rules in photography that I can write books about them. But here are a few that I found out very useful for smartphone photography.

1- Keep the phone as steady as possible

Holding your phone with both hands reduces the chance of camera shake.

2-Lock the focus and exposure

In most Smartphones, you can lock the focus and exposure by tapping and holding a point on your screen.

3- Composition Rules

Apply one or more of the following rules to elevate photos to the next level:

a) Apply Rule of Thirds: Off-Centre images are more dynamic. Create an eye-catching photo by placing the subject off-centre.

b) Use Negative Space: Don’t shoot too tight, and leave some areas around your main subject.

c) Keep the Horizon Straight: That is an interesting rule. Either keep the horizon perfectly straight or make it completely crooked. A small twisted horizon is a MISTAKE, and a big twisted one is ARTISTIC! Go figure!

d) Use Guidelines: Guidelines add depth to pictures. They are almost everywhere. Find and use them to add the third dimension to photos.

e) Use Geometric shapes: when they are available, adding geometric shapes (i.e. circle, square, etc.) makes images more pleasing.
