Lightroom Presets

How to Use and Create New Lightroom Presets

Lightroom has many amazing features, and one of them is Lightroom Presets. If you apply the same settings on to majority of the photos and want to save the time and maintain the consistent result, then Lightroom Presets are for you!

I have created some custom presets for my editing work and in most cases just applying one or two presets, and job is done! You can even apply presets while importing the photos to Lightroom! That is for another article though!

Lightroom ships with many default presets. Most of these presets are good starting points, but creating new Custom Presets according to your photography style or brand is the real feature.

What is Lightroom Presets?

Presets are set of adjustments that Lightroom remembers them and just by clicking one Button, it applies the whole adjustments to the selected image or images. In new Lightroom release (as of July 2018), you can even organize the presets and search for a particular one.

How do Lightroom Presets work?

Generally speaking, Lightroom remembers and applies certain settings in to the pictures. These can be a couple of adjustments or more. In this article I am going to focus on presets pal that ships with Lightroom.

Where are the Lightroom Presets?

You can find Lightroom Presets under Develop Module, on the Left hand side panel.

Lightroom Presets

Lightroom Presets

You notice that Lightroom comes with different varieties of presets. They are placed under different packs, here is the list of the packs

Color, Creative, B&W, Curve, Sharpening, Vignetting, Classic – B&W Filter, Classic – B&W Presets, Classic – Color Presets, Classic – Effects, Classic – General, Classic – Video, and User Presets.

Click on the arrow (the little Triangle) next to each pack to open the package and see the Presets inside it.

There are several presets inside each pack

You can hover the mouse over each Preset and see the result life on the image. In this example I selected Blue Filter B&W and you can see the effect.

Applying effects using Preset

Lightroom Presets
Lightroom applied all the adjustment for me just with one click!

That single click consisted of multiple adjustments that Lightroom applied. You can find the adjustments by looking in to the right panel and check what Lightroom changed to achieve the result. It is a good starting point for fine tweak the image further if needed.

Changes that Lr applied

Lightroom Presets
Lightroom applied many steps for this preset.

You can start experimenting with all of these presets. There are lots of neat and interesting effects, Go ahead and play with them. Lightroom is a non-destructive program, it won’t change your photos permanently. Keep trying different presets and stay tuned for our next article in how to Create Your own Lightroom Presets.

That is all for now. We love to hear from you. Let us know if you have used Lightroom Presets. Please send your questions to us and we will be more than happy to answer them. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more Free Tutorials and Tips.

Remove the dust using Lightroom

How to remove the dust using Lightroom or Photoshop Camera Raw Filter

In previous articles I covered how to spot and clean dust particles on the camera sensor. If you have some photos with dust spots on them, you need to remove the dust using Lightroom or Photoshop. I am going to show you a hidden gem in Lightroom and Photoshop, which makes spotting the dust easier and more accurate.

Efficient Technique to Remove the dust spots from a photo

It is very easy to use Spot Healing Brush in Lightroom or Photoshop to remove some of the dust spots, not all of them. Some of the dust spots are either too small or they are blended so well that makes it difficult to locate them.

In below picture, you can easily locate three dust spots,

Dust Spots

Dusty Sensor
You can easily detects 3 dust spots in this image.

Even when I zoomed to the image, it is not that easy to locate the pesky ones!

photography class

Even by zooming to the image, finding all dust spots is not that easy

In this photo I marked them all

Dust Spots are marked

In this photo I marked all the dust spots.
In this photo I marked all the dust spots.

You notice that in some photos it is very time consuming to locate all the dust spots. Here it comes, the Hidden Feature in Lightroom and Photoshop Camera Raw filter to rescue!

“Visualize Spots” In Lightroom and Photoshop

The “Visualize Spots” is the hidden gem in Lightroom and Photoshop which helps us to locate tiny dust spots and correct them. Lets get started

“Visualize Spots” in Lightroom

In Lightroom go to Develop Module and select “Spot Removal” tool, or press letter Q on the keyboard. Look at the bottom of the viewing are and you will see this hidden feature.

After activating the Visualize Dust, the photo turns in to negative black and white image.

“Visualize Spots” in Photoshop

In Photoshop it is hidden even deeper, go figure! Open the photo in Photoshop and go to top menu then Filter. From drop down menu select “Camera Raw Filter”. You can edit jog or Raw files, “Camera Raw Filter” is just the name of this filter.

Lightroom is one of the best digital editing and photo management softwares on the market. And it can be quite daunting for many photographers. Omnilargess Lightroom Training Program guides photographers to the right direction of learning Lightroom tools and controls to master it.

Lightroom Workshop – Start to Finish is developed around the needs of photographers who want to have an easy yet powerful workflow. This program consist of four classroom sessions in two weeks.

What is covered in Lightroom Training Program?

Each session is dedicated to one of these four modules: Setup, Library, Develop, and Print. Students will learn how to setup and use each modules and will have chance to practice the skills in classroom.

Setup

Setting up Lightroom correctly needs a little more time and effort. After the initial correct setup you can rest assured that Lightroom will work as a delicate assistant for you. It simply means that Lightroom will take care of these time consuming chores and frees up lots of your valuable time which you can spend on things that you love more, such as photography!

Library

Library is the core of Lightroom, that is why it is very important to set it up properly and it is the main reason for Lightroom to be a non-destructive software. Lightroom Library not only stores images, it also stores all the keywords, Meta Data, editing, and adjustments in one place!

Lightroom Radial Filter New Technique

A hidden gem in Lightroom Radial Filter

Lightroom is probably the best program for managing and organizing images. It also has many hidden gems and in this article I am going to look at the usefulness of the LIGHTROOM RADIAL FILTER for selective adjustments.

You may have used the Lightroom Radial Filter to adjust the exposure or add some effects to your photos like in this example:

Lightroom Radial Filter

Lightroom Radial filter
In this picture I used Lightroom Radial Filter to brighten the car.

Using Lightroom Radial Filter to create a shallow depth of field

One of the most used cameras in the world is probably the iPhone (or other smartphones). And the main short comings of all smart phones, as well as point and shoot cameras, is they cannot provide a shallow depth of field to make our main subject more pronounced. In most of the workshops I teach I don’t have time to use my real camera, so I take photos with my iPhone. When I go biking I’d rather travel light and not carry heavy cameras and lenses. These are the times I wish my iPhone could make the background pleasingly blurred.

Thanks to Lightroom Radial Filter, now I can create a shallow depth of field effect in my images. Here are examples:

Lightroom Radial Filter

After editing

Lightroom Radial Filter settings for DOF

Lightroom radial filter
As you can see, by adding a radial filter and reducing the Sharpness to -100% and adjusting the Clarity a shallow depth of field effect is possible.

And here is another example for Radial filter

Original photo

That is a nice photo, but I know that a little shallow DOF would add more.

Notice how perfect the image is, just by little tweaking

Lightroom Collections

Learn Lightroom Collections and organize your pictures

There are many different photo editing softwares in the market, but for sure none of them has the power of Lightroom when it comes to picture organizing and management. One of the key features of Lightroom CC or Lightroom 6 is the Lightroom Collections.

Generally speaking, we can describe Lightroom Collections as Albums. The same way that you collect certain photos in albums for displaying, you can collect your digital pictures in Lightroom Collections and have them ready for sharing online, create slideshows, editing, or print.

What are the advantages of Lightroom Collections?

There are three types of Collections in Lightroom: Collection, Collection Set, and Smart Collection.

Lightroom

Lightroom Collection, One of the most powerful feature in Lightroom CC and Lightroom 6

In our Lightroom workshops I cover all the major features of each type of collection and the applications that you can use them for. But the most important feature of Lightroom collection is that you can put a photo in different collection without copying the photo.

This is the most important feature for many photographers.

Can you give us an example?

Here is an everyday example for you:

When you came back from your trip to France and uploaded the photos to Lightroom. You added all the keywords and then it is time to organize the photos.

You can create a Collection Set and call it “France 2017” and add all the photos to this collection. Now you can create collections inside this collection set for each cities and towns that you have visited there and add the photos of each city to it’s appropriate collection without duplicating the photos! You can also add some of these photos to other collection such as to your Landscape collection and Nighttime photography collection, without having multiple copies of the same photo.

To me and many other photographers this feature is the main key feature to appreciate Lightroom Collections functionality.

Are there any other usages for Lightroom Collections?

There are many more useful features in Lightroom Collections that I will cover the most of them in our Lightroom Library Workshop on August 30th. In this three hour hands on workshop you will learn how to correctly import the photos to Lightroom, create different type of collections, search for the photos by different filtering points and much more.

Lightroom Introductory Workshop for beginners to intermediates

Lightroom Introductory Workshop specially developed for new users. We cover fundamentals in Lightroom setup and usages. It is a three hour workshop with plenty hands on examples.
