Wednesday Photography Tips: DISCOVER NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Vancouver Skyline at Night from Stanley Park

A Fun Night Photography Tour at Stanley Park

Many believe that opportunities for landscape photography end once the sun sets for the day.

But for those who know the proper techniques, landscape photography opportunities are always present, regardless of the time. For successful night photography, you need to learn how to set up your camera, measure the exposure, identify distracting elements and how to avoid them, and many more.
A professional educator can make learning photography full of fun!

The Art Of Seeing

The Art Of Seeing In Photography

In photography, like other visual arts, an artist should use basic visual effects to create the art. The Art Of Seeing is one the most important aspects in photography. Therefore, as photographer you need to learn how to see the scene. However, in nature we see everything in colour, and colour can be so deceiving. Here is an example that shows how colours are very deceiving, or rather distracting.

Colour Version

The Art Of Seeing is all about how to locate the Highlights and Shadows to create a photo.
The Art Of Seeing is all about how to locate the Highlights and Shadows to create a photo.

However, when I removed the colours from this photo, it is not as attractive as it used to be.

By removing the colours, this photo looks very boring.

Don’t let the Colours decide for you!

Colours are so pretty and everyone likes the colourful images. However, they don’t have much value for composition in photography. Here is another example.

This photo looks very pleasing. It also has some basic composition rules, but it does not bear any photographic value. Here is why. After converting the photo to black and white, you notice that the photo is so flat and boring!

Art Of Seeing Photography Class

Highlights and Shadows play a big role in photography composition. By understanding the rules of shadows and highlights, composition will be easy for a photographer. However, at first you need to teach your brain not to get distracted by colours.

Chasing Shadows and Highlights is an intermediate to advanced photography class which is specially developed for focusing on the Art Of Seeing in Photography. This workshop is scheduled for September 14th. Please visit the link for more details.

Should you consider the importance of the art of seeing?

Absolutely! The art of seeing can transform “a photo” to “theoPhoto“! Here are few examples of good uses of highlights and shadows. Clearly, you see that if you use the correct techniques, the picture is equally beautiful in colour or black and white.

Even in the black and white version, this photo is beautiful. Thanks to the Art of Seeing!

  • Finding and Using Highlights and Shadows

  • And much more.

Unleash the power of your digital camera

Digital Cameras are just electronic devices with no reasoning capabilities, so don’t let them make the decisions for you! Come out and learn what your digital camera can do for you and how you can take control over it. Don’t be scared off by all of the buttons and settings that you don’t understand. We can break it down for you in easy steps and give you examples to demonstrate what happens when you change the settings. We also believe that hands-on experience is necessary in the learning process. You will only learn if you do it, and if you then continue to practice what you have learned. That is all included in Vancouver Photography class!

Education Leads to Success

Education leads to Success

Insights from one of our students

We’ve all heard the saying: Practice makes perfect. It says that it takes 10,0000 hours to master a skill. Wow! If we wanted to fast track this process (and it is a process!), what would be the best way to do it?

In this short article, I look at the importance of the role of education and how it leads to Success.

Maria Killam is a renowned interior designer who leads many successful workshops in Canada and the USA for interior design. She is also one of the most talented artists I have ever met.

Here is her testimony after taking one of my photography classes:

Maria Killam

I have had my DSLR Camera for over 2 years and had no idea how to use it. As a colour expert, decorator and design blogger, it’s so important for me to have pretty images on my blog. I had tried many times to take photos that included a window but my automatic functions (auto settings in camera) would not allow it. That one day when I learned how to turn an image from dark and bleak to a light filled space was worth the entire price of the course. Your patience and sense of humour with a bunch of novices in the class was great! Thanks again for a great boot camp! I look forward to learning more from you! Thank you so much!
Maria Killam, Colour Expert and Design Blogger, mariakillam.com

Over the last several years Maria has taken some of my classes and workshops and hired me for photography and editing consultation. Recently she wrote a blog post and mentioned the importance of education for success. In the part of her article she wrote:

“I would like to thank Ted Karlsalr my photography instructor (pictured below). I hired him to give me some extra photography tips while I was shooting my home; I wanted to make sure I was using all the right settings. Ted introduced me to the world of Lightroom. I didn’t know that it comes with Photoshop when you buy the monthly plan from Adobe. Lightroom manages all your photos, automatically saves all your changes, and is much faster for editing. You only need to move them into Photoshop if you need to do things like take out wires, etc. And you can download them right into Lightroom when you are shooting so you can easily see what has to be moved in order to get the photo absolutely perfect. Ted regularly holds classes on photography, Photoshop and Lightroom; it was only when I started taking his classes 3 years ago that my photos on this blog started to improve dramatically. After I took his Photoshop class, every couple weeks I would go to his office for an hour or two of private lessons so I could learn exactly what I needed to know to edit my design photos and these lessons were hugely valuable. Go here to see his available courses.”

Click HERE to read the full article on her blog and see her wonderful images; they are visual evidence of how education has brought her to a level of professionalism with her photography.

I want to thank Maria for her kind words and continued support. Education is the key to success, especially when it comes to technical skills.  Great pictures are the result of good composition and correct exposure, regardless of what equipment you use. Our photography workshops are focused on teaching you important skills for getting good exposures and composition. No matter what kind of camera you use, you can make wonderful photos when you learn the fundamentals of photography. Our Digital Camera Bootcamp is an 8 week program which covers all the major topics and equips you with the skills to confidently capture amazing photos. It includes two field trips (one daytime and one night time photography) where you put all the lessons to good use out in the “real world” with a variety of settings and conditions.

We encourage you to make a commitment to educating yourself to success by registering for one or two workshops in 2017. Together let’s make the New Year a time when you see real advancement in the quality of your photographs.

New Advanced photography Workshops

Developing an advanced photography workshop is not an easy task; it requires the instructor to be up to date on the latest information about new digital cameras and editing softwares. An instructor should also consider how to break down the advanced topics into smaller pieces without sacrificing important elements.

I am very pleased to announce that starting in 2017 we are going to offer a stimulating lineup of new intermediate to advanced photography workshops and editing classes. All of the advanced photography workshops will have this icon;

Let’s get started with two Advanced photography Workshops for now and Stay tuned for more!

HDR Pro Workshop

advanced

HDR stands for High Dynamic range. For refreshers on this style and technique, please check out past articles where I explained the HDR and ZONE SYSTEM in detail.

Successfully shooting HDR requires special techniques: understanding the Zone System and how our cameras “see” the zones and how to accurately calculate exposures and the number of shots to create a perfect HDR. Our HDR Pro workshop also covers the Editing Techniques for HDR in popular software such as Photoshop and Lightroom. The HDR Pro Workshop is developed for intermediate to advancedphotographers who want to take their skills to next level and explore this exciting style of imagery. This workshop consists of two parts (Shooting Techniques and Editing Guide Lines).

HDR Pro workshop is another Advanced photography class and it is scheduled for April 8th 2017. For more information please click Here
