Spooky Lightroom Techniques

Create Spooky Photos Using Lightroom Techniques

Hey folks! I have been quiet for quite some time and haven’t written any posts. It was hectic here for a couple of weeks, and I have some amazing news to share with you shortly. For now, as we get closer to Halloween, I have decided to post simple Lightroom techniques that you can use for Halloween images.

Lightroom techniques are for making corrections and adding some odd effects to photos if you wish to do so. In this article, I will use the Lightroom Split Toning technique to create a Spooky Photo for this Halloween. Keep reading, and stay tuned for good news!

Let's Get Really Spooky Using Lightroom Techniques!

Lightroom is the best photo organizer and one of the most powerful editing software in the market. You can organize digital pictures and almost all of the image corrections in one single program. This feature makes Lightroom a unique program. All of the Lightroom editing tools are located inside the Develop module, and Lightroom has many hidden gems as well, and Split Toning is one of them.

What is the Split Toning?

Split Toning is one of those Advanced Lightroom Techniques. In short, Split Toning allows you to assign different colour tones to Highlights and Shadows. This unique Lightroom technique can be used to remove the colour cast from highlights and or shadows. I used the Split Toning to add the different colours to highlights and shadows to this image. This little adjustment changed the whole photograph from boring to amazing!

Using Split Toning Step By Step

Here is an example of how I use Split Toning to add spooky colours to a photo.

1- I opened the photo in Lightroom and apply the basic Lightroom Techniques to make the improvement.

The little editing helped the picture. I adjusted the contrast, Saturation, and added a little Dehaze.

Then I opened the Split Toning tab and added dark Blue colour for Shadows and Light Orange colour for Highlights. Then I used the Balance Slider to mask how far the colours should apply. Here is the result and screenshots:

Here is the final job. Very easy and simple Lightroom Techniques for creative photographers.

Let's Get Really Spooky Using Photoshop and Lightroom Techniques!

For the best result, it is better to use Photoshop and Lightroom Techniques together to create a more realistic image. In the image below, I used mixed Photoshop and Lightroom Techniques. I used Basic edit and Split Toning in Lightroom and then used several layers and adjustment layers in Photoshop. Let me know if you want me to post the step by step tutorial about these techniques.

I hope you enjoy using Lightroom Split Toning tool as much as I do.

Lightroom Presets

How to Use and Create New Lightroom Presets

Lightroom has many amazing features, and one of them is Lightroom Presets. If you apply the same settings on to majority of the photos and want to save the time and maintain the consistent result, then Lightroom Presets are for you!

I have created some custom presets for my editing work and in most cases just applying one or two presets, and job is done! You can even apply presets while importing the photos to Lightroom! That is for another article though!

Lightroom ships with many default presets. Most of these presets are good starting points, but creating new Custom Presets according to your photography style or brand is the real feature.

What is Lightroom Presets?

Presets are set of adjustments that Lightroom remembers them and just by clicking one Button, it applies the whole adjustments to the selected image or images. In new Lightroom release (as of July 2018), you can even organize the presets and search for a particular one.

How do Lightroom Presets work?

Generally speaking, Lightroom remembers and applies certain settings in to the pictures. These can be a couple of adjustments or more. In this article I am going to focus on presets pal that ships with Lightroom.

Where are the Lightroom Presets?

You can find Lightroom Presets under Develop Module, on the Left hand side panel.

Lightroom Presets

Lightroom Presets

You notice that Lightroom comes with different varieties of presets. They are placed under different packs, here is the list of the packs

Color, Creative, B&W, Curve, Sharpening, Vignetting, Classic – B&W Filter, Classic – B&W Presets, Classic – Color Presets, Classic – Effects, Classic – General, Classic – Video, and User Presets.

There are several presets inside each pack

You can hover the mouse over each Preset and see the result life on the image. In this example I selected Blue Filter B&W and you can see the effect.

Applying effects using Preset

Lightroom Presets
Lightroom applied all the adjustment for me just with one click!

That single click consisted of multiple adjustments that Lightroom applied. You can find the adjustments by looking in to the right panel and check what Lightroom changed to achieve the result. It is a good starting point for fine tweak the image further if needed.

Changes that Lr applied

Lightroom Presets
Lightroom applied many steps for this preset.

You can start experimenting with all of these presets. There are lots of neat and interesting effects, Go ahead and play with them. Lightroom is a non-destructive program, it won’t change your photos permanently. Keep trying different presets and stay tuned for our next article in how to Create Your own Lightroom Presets.

That is all for now. We love to hear from you. Let us know if you have used Lightroom Presets. Please send your questions to us and we will be more than happy to answer them. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more Free Tutorials and Tips.
