New Nikon D500 Added to Rentals

Nikon D500 Ready For Rental

I am very pleased to announce that the new Nikon D500 is available for rental. Generally speaking when you start shooting the full frame camera, you don’t want to go back and shoot in APSC size sensor. I had the same idea, but Nikon D500 is a different beast! Its speed, Dynamic Range and Noise management are par with a full frame camera! Here is a little more information from Nikon Canada:

Flagship Power, DX Agility.

Meet the new DX flagship, the Nikon D500. At first glance, it may seem unimposing—but contained within a streamlined camera body is a veritable powerhouse of processing power and technological advances. The D500 is ready to go wherever your passion leads you, capturing everything with stunning clarity, speed and resolution. From busy, low-light cityscapes to thrilling wildlife scenes and fast action shots, the D500 is the ideal companion to your wanderlust. Marvel at the clarity of its cinematic 4K UHD video. Be amazed at its ruggedness and versatility. And, once you’ve captured your gorgeous photos, admire them on the D500’s high resolution tilt touchscreen display and share them via the built-in SnapBridge (Wi-Fi® + Bluetooth) capabilities. No matter what you shoot, you can be sure that the Nikon D500 will be up to the task, time and time again.

Why use an APSC sensor?

The main reason for shooting in APSC size sensor is the Crop Factor. As the Nikon D500 has a slightly smaller sensor, it uses the centre part of the image that lens creates, Which is the sweet spot and the sharpest part. On the other note you get a 1.5X magnification from the lens focal length. In short a 200mm telephoto lens works as a 300mm lens. This is the biggest advantage of APSC size sensor over the full frame sensor.

Many Wildlife and Sport photographers prefer this crop factor and use the feature to capture a closer and sharper image.

The disadvantages of a cropped sensor are, lack of Dynamic Range, slower focusing, and more noise in high ISO shooting. Somehow Nikon addressed these issues completely in the new D500. Here are some samples that I took using D500.

Canon EOS 5D MK III Field Test

Canon EOS 5D MK III Field Test Using Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS Lens

I took the Canon 5D MK III and the EF 24-105 for a test drive last week. I tested the camera in different light conditions with different settings. Overall I am very pleased with Canon EOS 5D MK III field test results.

The Canon 5D MK III performed very well in variety of hard conditions, as I was trying to push it to its limits! There are four different categories that I performed the test, Indoor, Outdoor, Metering Modes, Focusing system, and Auto White Balance. Here we are the first Canon EOS 5D MK III field test result.

Disclaimer:

All the pictures are taken Handheld, in Raw format to test the Dynamic Range, Auto White Balance, and Manual Exposure using Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS. I have used High ISO in indoor photos and ISO 400 for Outdoor pictures. The Image Stabilizer was activated in all photos. All images are converted to JPG in Adobe Lightroom with no colour correction.

Indoor Photography

In indoor photography Canon 5D preforms unbelievably well. The focusing is fast and Accurate, even in very low light situations. I shot this photo at ISO 6400 and the noise level is minimum.

Even at ISO 6400 the noise level is minimum

Although the light was very dim (that I had to use ISO 2000 in this photo), the camera precisely focused very fast on the focusing point.

The test result shows that the Canon 5D MK III is a perfect camera for indoor photography (such as Sports, Wedding, or Event Photography).

Outdoor Photography

Metering Modes:

a-Evaluative Metering

I am not a big fun of multi-segmented metering (in Canon terms “Evaluative) as it always clipped the highlights, but Canon’s new algorithm of evaluative metering is very impressing. It does maintain the highlight as much as possible. Here is the photo in evaluative mode.

I also used evaluative metering for this picture and just opened up the Shadows in Lightroom.

b-Spot Metering

Spot Metering works as it is supposed to work. I didn’t have any issues of over or under exposure using spot metering.

Focusing System:

Canon EOS 5D MK III has a very sophisticated focusing system. I really appreciate the dedicated Focusing Menu and Function Keys. Changing the focusing points is now very intuitive and easy. I shot these photos using Single Shot Mode

When it comes to moving subjects, it is always a good idea to use AI or AI Servo. I really enjoyed the speed and accuracy of Canon AI Servo focusing mode. It tracks the subject and maintains the focusing.

Auto White Balance

New Canon Auto White Balance is incredibly pleasant. I did not adjust the White Balance in these photos. I shot these photos in shade. Usually cameras produce a very cold colour cast in this situation but Canon did a good job. The colours are very warm and pleasing.

Choosing Correct Focal Length

Tips on Choosing correct focal length for your photography project

In previous article we discussed the Lens Focal Length. Here I am going to share some tips about choosing the correct focal length for different types of photography.

Choosing the correct focal length is the key for creating that stunning photo that you have visualized. For instance, what lens focal length should you use for portrait, or landscape, etc. is the main part of this article.

There are several ways to explain the characteristics of different focal lengths, and here I am going to discuss the angle of view and how focal length can affect the Depth of Field.

Lenses for Landscape Photography

The wide angles are the best lenses for landscape, cityscape, architectural, and interior  photography. As we discussed it before, any focal length smaller than standard lens (e.g. 30mm in APSC format, and 50mm in full frame cameras) are wide angle lenses. They have larger angle of view and cover more of the scene.

Comparing Wide angle and normal lenses

Comparing Wide angle and normal lenses. Notice how wide angle covered moe of the scene
Comparing Wide angle and normal lenses. Notice how wide angle covered moe of the scene

On the other hand wide angle lenses provide more Depth of Field, which means you get more focusing range by using the same aperture. In below picture I cropped the wide angle shot and the picture from a normal focal length to the same subject. Notice how focusing range is shallower in the normal lens

Comparing Depth of Field in wide angle Vs Normal lenses

I shot both images at f8. Notice that in 50mm lens the depth of field is very shallower
I shot both images at f8. Notice that in 50mm lens the depth of field is very shallower

Super wide angle lenses are very artistic but controlling the lens distortion is a big challenge.

Lenses for Portrait Photography

We don’t need a larger angle of view for portraits as we try to reduce the distracting elements. On the other note, the wide angle distortion changes the shape of the face, the closer part of the body to the lens looks bigger. Who wants to have bigger nose or head?

And photographers usually use a very shallow depth of field to separate the model from the background and or avoiding distracting elements.

Longer Focal length for Portrait

By knowing the above facts we conclude that the best focal length for portrait photography is 50mm or higher. The longer focal length the more out of focus background and foreground. In photos below you can see how the shallow depth of field added pleasant effect to pictures.

Notice the shallower depth of fields in longer telephoto

Lenses for Sport or Wildlife Photography

Longer focal lengths are the best lenses for sport or wildlife photography, as you can not or should not be close to the subjects. The best focal length for these types of photography is 200mm or higher. These telephotos provide safer distance yet larger magnification.

We opened our Photography Equipment Rentals back in January 2014 with plans for adding more cameras and lenses to our rental department.

This is a perfect, affordable option for those times when you need a particular gadget to finish your project and don’t want to buy the gear, or perhaps you just learned a new technique and want to try it to see if it works with your style of photography. These are times when having camera equipment rentals in your area comes in handy!

For example Summer sunlight can be very strong and can cause exceptionally hard light. You want to take some shots outdoors and your client insists on having the session at mid day when the sun is at its brightest and highest point. What can you do? There’s an easy solution! Just use your strobe or flash to over power the sunlight. And with a soft box on your flash you can create very natural looking images.
