New Workshop: PHOTOGRAPHING STARS

Photographing the Stars (not the ones from Hollywood)

The night sky has always been a fascinating mystery. Since we first started walking the earth, humans have looked to the heavens with awe and amazement, admiring the beauty of the stars at night.

However, capturing the beauty of the Night Sky and Milky Way on a camera requires special techniques that we aim to teach you.

We invite you to join Ted Karlsalr of Omnilargess Photography Classes and Brett Michaud Photography as they share their expertise in Night Sky Photography with you.

What is a Night Sky Photography Tour?

The Night Sky Photography Tour is a three-hour field workshop aimed at capturing photos of stars and the Milky Way and will be conducted at Abbotsford, BC’s Dark Sky Park. Here we will teach you all the techniques you need to capture the beauty of a starry night anytime, anywhere.

What you will learn:

During the nighttime session:

1- Camera settings for capturing night sky images ( aperture, shutter speed, ISO.)

2- Focusing at night.

3- Find the Milky Way with the phone app, using PhotoPills.

4- Determine the best time of day/year to photograph the night sky.

5- Camera settings for light painting foreground subjects.

6- How to light paint foreground subjects.

During the optional editing session in our studio

7- How to edit night sky images in Lightroom and Photoshop.

8- Combining light-painted foregrounds with night sky images in Lightroom and Photoshop.

9- How to deal with noisy images created by high ISO settings.

10- New Tips and tricks to editing night sky images in post.

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

Dates:

As nightscape photography requires a cloudless night and no moon in the sky, we have set some possible dates for this workshop.

Please check the Night Sky Photographing Tour page for more information about the dates.

Optional Add On Workshop:

Night Sky images require special treatment in post-processing to bring out the depth and richness of colours invisible to the naked eye. To get the most out of your evening, we encourage you to pick up your ticket for our Night Sky Editing Session, hosted one week after the tour, to learn how to enhance your pictures using Lightroom or Photoshop. We will set the date and time for this optional workshop right after the event.

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

Do you want to learn more?

Depending on the weather conditions, we could be going out on any one of these nights. We will watch the weather, and when the forecast looks great, we will notify you the day before whether the workshop is on for the following day.
Please note that we will only be going out on one of these evenings unless demand is so great that we must teach on two nights to keep the numbers manageable, so you all get the attention you deserve.
It would be best to keep your calendar clear for all these days.
The workshop duration is three hours, including half an hour for setting up your camera and half an hour for packing them up, so be prepared for two hours of photography fun!

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

That is all for now. Stay tuned for my next photography Tips. We love to hear from you. Let us know if you have any questions, feel free to send us your questions, and we will be more than happy to answer them. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more Free Tutorials and Tips.

Quick Camera Tip: LIGHT PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHY

A Quick Tip On Light Painting Photography

Light Painting is one of the less-explored areas in photography. Here is a quick tip on Light Painting photography by @BrettMichaud, our new instructor.

Light Painting Photography Technique

Light Painting Photography
Light Painting Photography techniques are less-explored areas in photography.

Light Painting Photography Tip by Brett Michaud

This image is a blend of several shots. I took one shot for the sky and five shots for the building and foreground.

Then, I combined them using Lightroom and Photoshop.

When photographing the night sky, you must set up your camera to let in every bit of light you possibly can while keeping the stars sharp and focused.

A high ISO of between 1600-3200 is recommended. Opening your aperture up as wide as possible, in this case, f/2.8 and then using the 500 rule to determine the shutter speed of 15 seconds, provided just what I needed for these stars to be visible but not blurry.

It’s important to remember that it is always wise to carry extra batteries when photographing night scenes, as the long exposure drains the battery fast.

Do you want to learn more about Light Painting Photography Skills?

If you want to challenge yourself to take these kinds of images and try the Light Painting Techniques, we invite you to sign up for our Night Photography tour in Vancouver’s historic Gastown.

Gastown Night photography class is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2022. It is a full-night workshop that covers many more tips and techniques.

Wednesday Photography Tips: LIGHTNING PHOTOGRAPHY TIP

Easy Lightning Photography Tip

Lightning Photography sounds very difficult. Brett Michaud shared a lightning photography tip, and it is straightforward to follow.

Lightning Photography Tip

This Lightning Photography tip uses a camera's built-in interval timer.
This Lightning Photography tip uses a camera's built-in interval timer.

Brett Lightning Photography Tip

Taking pictures of storms is all about technique and a whole lot of luck.

There are many fancy gadgets out there designed to catch lightning strikes, but they really aren’t necessary if you understand how to use the interval timer that many new cameras have built-in.

I captured this image by setting the camera up, starting an interval timer to take 150 consecutive shots of 3 seconds each and then hoping for the best.

Using a wide focal length of 24mm increases your chances of capturing a strike on the horizon. And, of course, safety is of utmost priority!

Quick Camera Tip: SETTING FOR SEASCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

A Quick Tip On Camera Setting For Seascape Photos

I decided to share a Camera Setting tip every Monday.

This tip is about Seascape photography by @BrettMichaud, our new instructor.

Seascape Photography Tip

Vancouver Island Photo Tour
Vancouver Island has a unique landscape. Discover the beauty of West Coast.

Seascape Photography Tip by Brett Michaud

On this rather dark, overcast day, I wanted to capture the stormy feel of the ocean by freezing the motion in the water and showing the size of the sea. It required a fast shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second. The use of f/11 provided an adequate depth of field.
The low ambient light levels coupled with the mid-range aperture setting and fast shutter speed meant I needed to use ISO 320 to achieve a good exposure.

It’s important to remember that when photographing ocean waves, it is always wise to underexpose your image by a ½ to 1 full stop, so the crests of the waves are not blown out.

Do you want to learn more?

If improving your seascape photography is something you’d like to do, we invite you to join us at our workshop on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

DISCOVER VANCOUVER ISLAND

Capture the Beauty of Sunset and Sunrise in Vancouver Island

Sunset and Sunrise scenes are very mesmerizing; Mother Nature creates an impressive colourful work of art in the sky during these times of the day. Here are two tips for better sunset images:
1- Use the lowest possible ISO to capture colours.
2- Use Spot Metering to set the exposure for the sky, not the foreground.
