Healing Power of Photography: Good for the Soul

For this week’s testimony, I want to share a short post that Brett Michaud wrote for us. He took some photography classes and the healing power of photography has changed his view.

Mindfulness by Brett Michaud

It is 3:00 AM, and I wake up from what has been a restless sleep. Immediately my mind begins to roll over all the things I have to do. I begin to have imaginary conversations with coworkers and worrying about the health and well-being of loved ones, for no apparent reason. I question the satisfaction I have with my job and relationships. I lay there, tossing and turning, mind running in overdrive, until my alarm goes off. I drag myself out of bed and get ready for the day, already exhausted before the day has even begun.

For the past two years, the realities of Covid and the hardships of lockdowns, travel bans, forced isolations and concerns and fears around our health and safety have taken a toll on our mental health. These stresses have been added on top of our already busy lives. Now more than ever, finding some way to replenish ourselves and settle our minds is crucial. For me, and I am sure many of you, getting out into nature with our camera has been crucial to our mental well-being.

The Mindfulness Of Photography

Not unlike yoga, meditation or tai chi, landscape photography is an intensely mindful activity. Taking a landscape image demands that we take heed of all mother nature is serving up: colours, shapes, light, shadow, wind, water… All these factors must be considered when finding a composition. But the mindfulness activity does not stop there. Much of the artistry happens with the mere camera settings you decide upon. Aperture, shutter speed, focal length, exposure, and depth of field all play a huge role in the mood and feel of the image and demand your attention to realize your vision. With so much going on and so much to pay attention to, the demands and stresses of our daily lives melt away. Our brains are allowed to rest from the stresses that plague us relentlessly, and as a result, we relax and find peace, even if just for a short time.

Psychologists and psychiatrists have long espoused the virtues of mindful activities and their restorative nature. If you find yourself short of temper, down in the dumps, frustrated by your job, or just feeling a little blah, consider grabbing your camera and immersing yourself in nature. The benefits to both your mental and physical health are well documented. And, as a side benefit, the beautiful images you create may just bring joy to others.
