Comprehensive Beginner Photography Bootcamp

Duration: 6 Saturdays (4 classroom sessions + 2 field trips)
Time: Saturday mornings, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Location: Omnilargess Classroom (for sessions), Abbotsford parks (for field trips)


Photography Lessons
Manual focus is a technique used by creative photographers to achieve precise control over the exposure of their images.

Session 1: Getting to Know Your Camera

  • Introduction to the Bootcamp and gear check

  • Understanding camera types and settings (DSLR, Mirrorless, etc.)

  • The Exposure Triangle: ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture

  • Autofocus modes and shooting modes

  • Hands-on: Camera setup and practice with exposure


Session 2: Mastering Exposure and Composition

  • Deep dive into manual mode

  • Metering modes and exposure compensation

  • Basic composition rules (Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Framing)

  • Using natural light effectively

  • Hands-on: Indoor and controlled lighting practice


Session 3: Lenses, White Balance & Creative Techniques

  • Focal lengths, prime vs. zoom lenses

  • Understanding depth of field and bokeh

  • White balance and colour temperature

  • Introduction to creative techniques (panning, motion blur, silhouettes)

  • Hands-on: Practical setup and guided shooting exercises

  • Prepping for field trips: what to pack, how to scout locations

Field Trip 1: Nature & Landscape Photography

  • Location: Mill Lake Park

  • Focus: Manual exposure, light metering, composition

  • Real-world shooting with instructor guidance

  • Peer and instructor feedback on site


Field Trip 2: Urban & Street Photography

  • Location: Fish Trap Creek Park

  • Focus: Candid shots, using natural light creatively, shooting motion

  • Real-time feedback, tips for capturing people and moments

  • Wrap-up, review, and discussion

Session 4: Preparing for Real-World Photography

  • Review images and Q&A

  • Introduction to storytelling through photography

  • Intro to basic image review and culling and editing techniques
