Improving Your Photography Skills Through Photo Analysis: Tips and Techniques

Photo analysis is crucial if you want to improve your photography skills. On another note, we can call it “Learning From Mistakes!”. In this article, I will delve deeper into the topic and explain how photo analysis can help improve your skills.

Exposure is the Master Key

Exposure is the most crucial element in photography, and we can control it through the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. But what is the best exposure setting for a photo? Unfortunately, this question has no universal answer, as it depends on various factors such as lighting conditions, desired effects, and artistic preferences. However, analyzing photos can help you find the best combination of shutter speedaperture, and ISO for a particular photo.

1- Aperture

When it comes to aperture, you should pay attention to the depth of field (DOF). In photography, DOF refers to the area in the image that appears sharp and in focus. Sometimes, you may want a shallow DOF, where only the subject is in focus, and the background is blurred. Other times, you should have an expanded DOF, where everything in the scene is in focus. By analyzing your photos, you can determine whether the DOF is appropriate for the scene and adjust the aperture accordingly. In the example given earlier, the photographer noticed that the DOF was too shallow and increased the aperture to f/16 to bring the ducks into the focusing range.

By using larger aperture setting, the focusing range gets shallower.

Using a higher value for the aperture expands the focusing range.

2- Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is another crucial element in photography, and finding the correct shutter speed can be a challenge. Generally, consider whether you want to freeze the action or create motion blur. If you’re going to freeze the action, you need a fast shutter speed, whereas if you’re going to create motion blur, you need a slow shutter speed. By analyzing your photos, you can determine whether the shutter speed was appropriate for the scene and adjust it accordingly. In the example given earlier, the photographer initially set the shutter speed to 1/500s to capture a duck flapping its wings, but it needed to be faster. The photographer then increased the shutter speed to 1/2000s to capture the perfect image.

Photo Analysis Tip

Slowing down the shutter speed blurs the moving elements, such as the water in this example.
