Summer Photography Tips 3: Locations

Locations and Timings for Summer Photography

We discussed camera settings and lens selections in the previous parts of our summer photography tips series. Now, let’s turn our attention to finding the best locations and timings to make the most of your summer photography adventures.

Research and Scout:

Before heading out, research potential locations that interest you. Look for picturesque spots like national parks, beaches, gardens, or local landmarks. Scouting ahead of time allows you to plan your compositions and make the most of your time on location.

Golden Hours:

The hours shortly after sunrise and before sunset are known as the “golden hours” or “magic hours.” During these times, the light is softer, warmer, and more flattering, casting beautiful golden hues on the landscape. Make an effort to shoot during these times for captivating summer photos.

Blue Hour:

The blue hour occurs just before sunrise and after sunset when the sky takes on a beautiful blue hue. This time is particularly enchanting for capturing cityscapes or landscapes with artificial lights. Experiment with longer exposures to balance the ambient light with the city’s illuminated buildings or other artificial light sources.

Be Mindful of Harsh Light:

Summer days often come with intense sunlight, creating strong shadows and washed-out colours. To overcome this, consider shooting in the shade or using diffusers and reflectors to soften the light on your subjects. Alternatively, embrace the harsh sunlight for creative and dramatic compositions, such as high-contrast black-and-white images.

Embrace Unpredictable Weather:

Summer weather can be volatile, with sudden rainstorms, fog, or dramatic cloud formations. These conditions can add a unique touch to your images, creating mood and atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to venture out even when the weather isn’t perfect – you might be rewarded with unexpected and stunning shots.

As a photographer, your vision and creativity are vital in choosing locations and timings for your summer photography. Experiment with different places, times of day, and weather conditions to capture unique and captivating images. In the final part of our summer photography tips series, we’ll explore composition tips, including how to avoid sunspots in landscape and portrait photography.
