A Guide to Matrix Metering: How to Achieve Stunningly Balanced Shots Every Time
Previously, I discussed different metering modes in digital cameras. This post discusses when and how to use the Matrix or Evaluative Mode.
Matrix mode, or evaluative mode, is a default mode found on most modern cameras. It analyzes the light intensity of the entire scene and calculates the appropriate exposure settings for the image. Matrix or Evaluative metering is generally the most reliable mode for most shooting situations, as it considers the overall scene and provides a balanced exposure.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28333″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” title=”Matrix Metering Mode”][vc_column_text]
The Benefits of Matrix Metering
Here are some situations where matrix/Evaluative metering is advantageous:
- When shooting a scene with a wide range of brightness levels, Matrix/Evaluative metering can help ensure that the image’s bright and dark areas are correctly exposed.
- When shooting a complex scene with different lighting sources: it can help balance the exposure of different parts of the scene, ensuring that no area is under or overexposed.
- When shooting portraits or group shots: Matrix/Evaluative metering can help ensure that all subjects are correctly exposed, regardless of where they are positioned in the frame.
- When you don’t have time to adjust the exposure manually: it can help you quickly achieve a properly exposed image without fiddling with exposure settings.
To use matrix or Evaluative metering, set your camera to the matrix or evaluative metering mode and let the camera do the work. However, it’s important to note that no metering mode is foolproof. You may need to manually adjust exposure in certain situations, such as when shooting a scene with extreme contrast or when the subject is backlit.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20290″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” title=”Matrix or Evaluative Mode”][vc_column_text]
