Back to the Basics: White Balance Tips
Previously, I looked into different Exposure Modes. As another article about the back-to-the-basics, I want to discuss the White Balance and share a few tips with you!
Exposure Vs White Balance
Exposure controls the brightness and the contrast of pictures. So, if the image does not look right in brightness and contrast, you need to adjust the exposure.
Your photo may have the correct exposure, but the colour needs to be more accurate. In this case, you need to look at the White Balance setting.
White Balance Presets:
Almost all digital cameras have many White Balance presets: Auto, Daylight, Tungsten, Shade, Cloudy, etc.
These presets are helpful if you use them correctly. Here are a few tips on using these White Balance Presets:
Auto White Balance Vs Presets:
If you shoot in JPG, the auto White Balance is your best choice, especially with the new digital cameras.
In this setting, your camera automatically measures the light source colour temperature and sets the White Balance. In 90% of scenes, the camera sets a nearly perfect colour setting.
Other presets can be used when you notice that the camera cannot precisely set the colours. For instance, you take photos indoors, and the colour looks too orange or yellow. By switching to the Tungsten of Flourscent, you can fix the issue.
Custom White Balance:
With more than one light source, you can get accurate colours using the Custome White Balance. I will cover the Custom White Balance in another article. So, stay tuned.
