You know that you should set the camera to particular settings to capture the essential features that best describe the subject. Questions that Improve Portrait Photos

For this Wednesday Photo Tip, I discuss how to improve portrait photos by asking yourself a few questions. These questions guide you through setting the camera, choosing the correct Focal Length (Lens), and selecting the right background.

Here is a list of questions that you can ask yourself before starting the portrait settings:

Is it a moving subject? Is moving the central part of the subject’s personality? (Such as a Hockey player while playing)

In this case, you need to use a faster shutter speed, Continuous Focus and drive to freeze the action.

Do you want to add moving blurred to show the movement or freezing the action? (Such as a basketball player while spinning the ball)

To achieve the best result, consider using a slower shutter speed that is fast enough to create a sharp image of the model while making the moving items blurred.

Does the background help to showcase the personality of the subject? (Such as a farmer standing by the farm machinery)

There are many scenarios that the background is an added bonus to showcasing the personality of the model. For the best result, use a wide-angle lens and a higher f-stop. Adding elements to the portraitures is a powerful way of telling the story.

Does the background create a distraction?

Busy or distracting background ruins our pictures. To avoid distracting background, use a telephoto lens and a wide-open aperture.
