The Pros and Cons of Mechanical and Electronic Shutter
Photography has come a long way since its inception. It has evolved from film to digital, and advancements in camera technology came along with that. Two types of camera shutters that are widely used are mechanical and electronic shutters. In this post, we’ll explore the differences between these two types of shutters.

Mechanical Shutter
A mechanical shutter is a physical shutter that opens and closes to allow light to hit the camera sensor. It is made up of two curtains that move across the camera sensor. When the shutter button is pressed, the first curtain opens, and the second curtain closes when the desired amount of light has entered the camera. The length of time that the curtains remain open is known as the shutter speed.
One of the advantages of mechanical shutters is that they can be used with any type of camera, including film cameras. They also tend to produce less noise than electronic shutters, which can be useful in certain situations. However, mechanical shutters can also cause vibrations that can result in blurred images, especially at slower shutter speeds.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28395″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” title=”Shutter”][vc_column_text]
Electronic Shutter
On the other hand, an electronic shutter does not have any physical curtains. Instead, it uses an electronic signal to turn the camera sensor on and off to capture the image. When the shutter button is pressed, the sensor is turned on, and the sensor is turned off when the desired amount of light has been captured.
Electronic shutters have several advantages over mechanical shutters. They are entirely silent, which can be useful when noise is a concern, such as in wildlife photography or weddings. They also do not cause any vibrations, which means they can be used at slower shutter speeds without the risk of blurred images. Additionally, electronic shutters tend to have faster maximum shutter speeds than mechanical shutters.
However, electronic shutters also have some disadvantages. They are more prone to rolling shutter distortion, which occurs when the image is captured in a way that causes parts of the image to appear distorted. This can happen when there is movement in the scene or when the camera is moving. Additionally, electronic shutters can be affected by flicker from artificial light sources.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Conclusion
In conclusion, both mechanical and electronic shutters have their advantages and disadvantages. Mechanical shutters are reliable and produce less noise, but they can cause vibrations that can result in blurred images. Electronic shutters are silent, do not cause vibrations, and have faster maximum shutter speeds, but they can be affected by rolling shutter distortion and flicker from artificial light sources. Choosing the right type of shutter ultimately depends on the specific needs of the photographer and the situation they are shooting in.
