Ted’s Photo Gear Review: KASE Magnetic 5 in 1 Filter Kit
As previously discussed, There are three essential lens filters for digital photography:
1- UV Filter for lens protection.
2- Polarizing Filter to reduce glares and reflections.
3- ND Filters with different densities to reduces the light to use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures
Kase 5 in 1 Magnetic Filter Kit comes with one magnetic rim adaptor, one magnetic lens cap, one circular polarizing filter, two ND filters (ND8 and ND64) and a carrying case.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26774″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Kase 5 in 1 Filter Kit”][vc_column_text]Since Kase is relatively a new filter manufacturer, I tested the quality of the materials (metal rims, glass, coatings and magnets) and found that the built is decent.
The magnets are strong enough to hold the filter securely in place. I even stacked all three filters together and didn’t find any concerns.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26775″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Kase 5 in 1 Filter Kit”][vc_column_text]Secondly, I did a quick test by holding the ND8 filter in front of my lens to see if it creates any colour cast. And to my surprise, the coating reduced the exposure without changing colours.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26776″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Kase ND Filter Colour Test”][vc_column_text]Then, I tested the polarizing filter in the office by taking photos from prints on the wall. The Kase Polarizing Filter removed almost all the glare and reflection. However, it introduced a slightly warmer colour, which can be pleasing, especially when taking photos in higher elevations or landscapes.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26777″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”No Filter”][vc_single_image image=”26778″ img_size=”600×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”Using Kase Polarizing Filter”][vc_column_text]As you noticed, the polarizing filter created a nice and clean image.
Then I took the ND filters for a spin. I went to Steelhead Falls in the mid-day. It was so bright there, and without the ND filter, the slowest shutter speed that I could use was 1/60 sec, which was not slow enough to create a long exposure effect.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26779″ img_size=”400×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”No Filter”][vc_column_text]By adding the Kase ND64, I shot the below image at 3 seconds. I was quite pleased with the performance of the Kase ND Filter.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”26780″ img_size=”400×600″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn” title=”With Kase ND64 Filter”][vc_column_text]
Conclusion:
Package:
Kase 1 in 5 Filter Kit comes with a carrying case, which is very handy with soft poaches to protects filters. The magnetic lens cap is another bounce.
The magnetic rim allows attaching filters quickly and easily. I stack all three filters together, and the magnet was powerful to hold them together.
Built Quality:
Although Kase filters are relatively new in the market, the built quality is decent. The rim and the magnetic attachment are solid and safe. I couldn’t find any issues with threads on the magnetic adaptor; I could easily screw it to all of my lenses.
Coating:
The ND filter coating is excellent. It didn’t cause any colour cast on my photos.
However, the Polarizing layer creates a warmer tone, which can be very pleasing, especially when taking pictures in higher elevations.
It may look a bit pricy, but having three essential filters in a protective carrying case is a wise investment.
I purchased my Kase Filters at London Drugs @Highstreet. LondonDrugs carry Kase Filter kit in stock. Check it out!
