5 Photography Mistakes Beginner Photographers Make and How to Fix Them

Photography is an exciting journey filled with creativity and exploration. However, like any other skill, it requires time and practice to master. Beginner photographers often make some typical mistakes that can affect the quality of their photos. The good news is that these mistakes are easy to fix once you know what to look for. In this post, we’ll discuss five common photography mistakes and provide practical solutions to help you improve your shots.

In Program mode you have access to almost all the settings.

1. Relying on Auto Mode Too Much

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is relying too much on Auto mode. While it can be helpful in some situations, Auto mode limits your creative control over the exposure settings, leading to inconsistent results.

How to Fix It: Start experimenting with Manual mode or Semi-Automatic modes like Aperture Priority (A) or Shutter Priority (S). Learn the basics of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, and how they work together to create a well-exposed image. Practicing in different lighting conditions will help you gain confidence in manual settings.

2. Not Paying Attention to Composition

A well-composed image is more visually appealing. Many beginners place their subject dead center without considering the overall composition, leading to unbalanced and uninteresting photos.

How to Fix It: Use the Rule of Thirds by dividing your frame into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Place your subject along these lines or at their intersections to create a more dynamic composition. Additionally, pay attention to leading lines, framing, and symmetry to add depth to your images.

3. Ignoring Lighting Conditions

Lighting is one of the most crucial aspects of photography. Beginners often take photos in harsh midday sunlight, resulting in overly bright highlights and harsh shadows. Poor indoor lighting can also lead to underexposed or grainy images.

How to Fix It: The best time for natural light photography is during the golden hours—shortly after sunrise and before sunset—when the light is softer and more flattering. When shooting indoors, try positioning your subject near a window to take advantage of natural light, or use reflectors and external flashes to enhance the scene.

4. Overlooking Focus and Depth of Field

Blurry or out-of-focus images can ruin an otherwise great shot. Sometimes, beginners fail to choose the correct focus point or depth of field, leading to subjects that don’t stand out.

How to Fix It: Use Single Point Autofocus (AF-S) for still subjects and Continuous Autofocus (AF-C) for moving subjects. Also, adjust your aperture settings—use a wider aperture (low f-number) for portraits to blur the background and a smaller aperture (high f-number) for landscapes to keep everything in focus.

5. Not Shooting in RAW Format

Many beginners stick to shooting in JPEG, which limits post-processing flexibility. JPEG files compress the image and lose some details, making it harder to correct exposure and colors later.

How to Fix It: Switch to RAW format, which retains all image data and gives you more control over editing in post-production. You can adjust white balance, exposure, and sharpness without losing image quality. Most modern cameras offer RAW+JPEG mode if you want both formats.

Conclusion

Mistakes are part of the learning process, but understanding and correcting them will significantly improve your photography skills. By stepping away from Auto mode, mastering composition, paying attention to lighting, focusing correctly, and shooting in RAW, you’ll start capturing stunning, high-quality images in no time. Keep practicing, experimenting, and refining your techniques—great photography comes with experience!
